In some cases,
where unlicensed copies of movies were available as well, movie posters appeared without the names of
the cast or the director of the movie (on posters this was called "naku" or "nilam", for instance "Saw
Nilam"). These unlicensed posters frequently contained the names of other filmmakers with which the unlicensed
release was associated, usually with vulgar or insulting expressions, including "Thiruttu Varalaru" (from Adhe
Kadalan).
In some cases, the names of the cast were written on the backside of the movie posters, sometimes
written by a different actor than the actor depicted on the front. While some movie posters were illustrated
in full colour, others were in black and white. This was usually the case with posters from 1966 onwards,
the same year of the release of the movie, although some of the older posters may have been in full colour.
Although most posters are unknown, some movie posters from the 1970s are known to have been promoted
by V. Ravichandran, a well-known stunt performer and action director in the Tamil film industry who also
directed the movie Kaali in 1973.
Movie posters were initially promoted by newspaper ads and billboards, although the first print
advertisements appeared in 1965. This was possibly the beginning of the Tamil cinema-related fan club movement
known as "fan club".
The first movie advertisement in Tamil, promoting the movie Onna Vandhoo, appeared in the January
1965 issue of "Ananda Vikatan" newspaper. The movie was eventually released in 1966. The first Tamil
